An ode to the trail

April 14, 2017by Glenn Tait 2 Comments

Last night I cycled home from work and decided to run around my local nature reserve which has some awesome trails and is perched on the top of a hill […]

A lesson in resilience... it’s been a while since I’ve felt the burn in my chest. Perhaps it was the oxygen sapping wind or perhaps and more likely it was unfitness. Weeks of drinking, binging and junk food. Weeks of injury induced rest. I just needed to feel the rain and wind on my red raw face so I headed up into the hills to get me some weather related discomfort. Therapy comes in different guises and this is mine. Not only have I finished feeling beaten, pebble dashed and cold but i also feel alive. The climbs into the wind were tough, the wind doing its best to slow me down, the river that was the path soggy and soft underfoot slowing my progress further but I made the top. Pushing through the pain and realising the injured ankle was doing ok was a good feeling. As I sit with that aching good feeling of used muscles in the warmth of my home I know it feels even more cosy because I was out there in the elements having fun. #run #trail #wind #rain #scotland #elements #pentlands #edinburgh #getoutside #feelalive #fun #type2fun
The rain had been on all day. My injured ankle getting rested meant I couldn’t or shouldn’t run. Opting for a walk in the woods instead. Full waterproof gear on and I was good to go. The mist was hanging in the trees. Eerily still. Rain falling through the damp autumnal canopy to fall on wet decaying leaves. The tower gloomy and bold. Silhouetted trees flank it’s sides. This hill was in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped. It certainly looked the part today. It was good to get out in the fresh air and the local clag of Edinburgh. Even if it was a little damp. It makes wine, an open fire and home more cosy. #injury #tower #injuredrunner #beware #edinburgh #corstorphine #walk #mist #clag #monochrome
Cool autumn damp runs are back. It was a familiar feeling bursting the lungs with cool fresh air running up the Pentlands at first light. A distant memory being relived. The crisp air is a contrast to the humid air in Japan. Ran a bit of the @ratracehq Ultra Tour of Edinburgh. What a great course it is and reminds me how lucky we are to live in Edinburgh with all these amazing places to run! #run #pentlands #ultra #edinburgh
It sounds cliché and it probably is but the rugby does bring people together (plus alcohol helps)! We had nothing but great hospitality and good vibes coming from the Japanese and other fans. The rugby was amazing, atmosphere at all matches we went to was great, before during and after. We had a great night even away from the rugby where we got talking in small bar in Osaka to locals with broken English we got chatting around Japan, their food and drink. Before we knew it he was ordering us local foods where the barman cooked it in front of us and served it. It tasted amazing. We bought them drinks back. Then came Sake, Shoucyuu, and Japanese Whiskey. The culmination in the hospitality came when after they’d gone we found out he had paid our bill. Absolutely awesome experience. The Japan vs Scotland game was the best atmosphere I’ve witnessed at a rugby match. Both teams passionate but the Japanese outnumbered the Scots and their chants were deafening. The ladies next to Andy would cheer but then bow to Andy apologising for celebrating when they were losing. The venues and areas around them were great too. Street vendors, volunteers, and fans from different nationalities all having a good time! Brilliant experience at the rugby and Japan were great hosts. It’ll be Strange to be watching from home on Saturday morning, sober! #rwc2019 #rugby #tokyo #osaka #shizuoka #japan #beer
Japan. You were epic. Even though the Typhoon came through and adjusted our plans we had the best time in Japan. We will return. Here’s a few picture of our trip. #rugbyworldcup #rwc2019 #japan #hakone #fuji #hakone #osaka #kyoto #yokohama #tokyo #shizuoka #hiroshima #travel #rugby #england #scotland #typhoonhagibis #trail
For the next 24hrs we will be sheltering inside the hotel here in #Tokyo due to #typhoonhagibis I did fancy running whilst the wind is mild but the beers last night have put a stop to that 🤦‍♂️. Hopefully the storm will pass without much damage but I feel for those in less solid buildings than this one. A category 5 storm is one of the strongest apparently. 🤞🙏🇯🇵
What a majestic mountain, right? We’ve had some changes of plans due to #typhoonhagibis but I didn’t want to miss out on some trails here in Japan. The route was shortened and brought forward. Instead of the 50km rim trail (which was already in doubt due to injury) I hiked up to Mt Kintoki with Andy and ran a bit of the ridge before catching up with Andy on his hike back down. The weather was great, not humid for a change and cooler at 20C! We’re heading into Tokyo tomorrow to wait out the storm and hopefully will catch some rugby #RWC2019 on Sunday if the Scotland game goes ahead. Fingers crossed 🤞 I’ll need to come back here tho as this trail looks awesome #hakone #trailrunning #japan #fun #getoutside
Catching some waves. The tide was high, higher than I’ve seen it before when I rode out to South Queensferry. I had to escape the house after a day of working and intense thinking. #stressrelief #cycling #waves
What does an injured runner do on a running weekend? Answer: get jealous and drink alcohol. Nevertheless it was great to meet up with the dream team with extended members this weekend. Sad to be back at work still nursing the injury from the Cairngorms but hopefully will be mended soon. #run #injury #fun #mates #drink
The inaugural @type2events Fun Run was a success. Although I’ve got frozen peas on a swollen ankle it went great. The 30hour course covered a vast area and it started in heavy rain as runners started to bag checkpoints and the mandatory route. We headed for Our first one and onto lochnagar distillery in the heavy rain. Our strategy was to stay low until the weather cleared. It paid off, though everyone was foiled by a checkpoint being inside the protection area of Balmoral Castle. The police politely asking us to go around to save us disturbing the royal family. That aside we headed over to Broadcairn enjoying the fast running and beautiful surroundings. The tops were cold but we got the ones we wanted and descended into Loch Callater, enjoying the downhill running. The run out to Braemar was long and we missed the chippy by 20min. However the pub supplied me with beers, our strategy here was to sleep in the hall as it was the best bet to getting 40winks. Leaving before 7 our aches meant we were fast hiking over 30km today. Which bagged a few checkpoints and taking in a lovely pass over to the last checkpoint for us - The Punchbowl (last photo). Returning to HQ we were warmly greeted by @type2events race crew @jennytough and @narnain with coffee and cake. We were pleased with our strategy and glad we didn’t come last! Not really Type2 Fun, more like Type1.5 fun (probably due to the beer)! #race #mountainmarathon #mental #ultrarunning #type2funrun #great #awesome #cairngorms #beauty
Today consisted of running paddling and walking. With intermittent eating and drinking. Our 4th Island Oronsay is only accessible by a tidal flat. We arrived a bit early which meant wading through the water. The idyllic beaches were a treat looking over to Jura and Islay. It’s been fun running around the islands with Andy on bike. I’m leaving them sun kissed and slightly wind swept with lots of good memories. Shout out to @thecolonsaybrewery for their awesome Pigs Paradise ale. I’m drinking some on the @calmacferries heading to the mainland right now. #islands #run #cycle #holiday #hebrides #scotland #fun
Fuelled by whisky we headed for the big ferry via the small ferry. We had that one to ourselves and once back on Islay we waited for CalMac to pick us up. This ferry only runs Wednesdays and Saturdays, so our holiday was built around that timetable. The ferry took us to Colonsay, another island I’d yet to visit. I raced Sherpa off the ferry and we ran / cycled the 500m to the hotel. After a quick check in I borrowed some wheels and we rode around the island visiting Colonsay House for cake, and a pretty nice beach.
